Higher education (HE) establishments have seen unprecedented increases in student numbers in the past few years. In the past ten years, the number of students attending HE increased by over 40%. This increase owed much to a growth in foreign student numbers, particularly from Asia and Africa, from where more than one-third of all non-EU students originate.
All of this expansion has put increased pressure on HE budgets. In the lat few years, combined expenditure was just over 1% less than combined incomes. This has put particular strain on HE credit functions to collect student and commercial debts more quickly and at lowest cost.
